Having been to Link, I was surprised to find that I tested slightly on the authoritarian side of the spectrum. (For those of you who don't know, the political compass moves the political spectrum into 2 dimensions: conservative/liberal, and authoritarian/libertarian). This was unexpected, since I pride myself in my libertarian views. Upon reflection, I can see how this happened...
First, I believe in an ordered society, where people obey the law. Furthermore, and more to the point, I believe in a society where even (especially) the government is governed by law, and in the USA that law is the Constitution. Our Constitution was written for the people, in a way that the people could understand. Don't give me that BS about a living document. The Constitution says what it says, for all to see. If you want to change it, there are means to do that. Just don't ignore it or lie about what it says. And, he says pointedly, if you believe the Constitution has a penumbra you're an idiot.
Hang around me too long, and you'll be sick to death of me bringing up the Constitution, and how the government needs to abide by it. That is the first point of my political thought foundation.
Secondly, I believe that people are generally smart and capable, and able to provide for themselves. The role of any government should be to provide the security and standards for people to do just that. Beyond that, it needs to STAY OUT OF OUR LIVES. Americans are among the most charitable people on Earth, but we like to be charitable with our own money. Don't tax me to give my money to someone else in the name of charity. I'll just resent you for it. And for GOD's SAKE, don't tax me to fund immoral, unconstituitonal social programs.
Finally, I believe that we as Americans have the moral authority to defend our interests from foreign and domestic threats. I'd prefer we didn't go to war for humanitarian reasons, (IE Bosnia), but the time for debate is beforehand, not during the war.
Most of my political thought is founded in these three principles. See if this is not so in future articles...
